TE4J - Touch Everyone For Jesus went on a RoadTrip!

TE4J had a booth sponsored by the Sheridan Seventh-day Adventist Church at the Sandwich Fair, also known as the DeKalb County Fair. Attendance for the first couple days were pretty dismal because of all the rains from Hurricane Gustav, but on Friday the skys cleared and God worked out everything for the furtherance of the Gospel. People came out in droves as they usually do to the fair for the last 3 days and the booth was able to be a witness for God. When we step out in faith to serve our Lord Jesus, He will bless. The booth reached out to many souls, please keep them in your prayers.

Helping Hands and Healing Hearts

When Danny Frederick, Hinsdale Adventist Academy's Bible teacher and outreach coordinator, heard that the town of Munster, Indiana, was still in a desperate situation after flooding from the heavy September rains, he knew he had to take action! So, on October 9, 2008, a group of freshmen and sophomore students went to Munster to assist the United Way.

The students went door to door in the area of Munster devastated by eight feet or more of floodwaters from the Calumet River. Their mission was to find homeowners who still needed assistance cleaning and sanitizing their homes, and also those who needed construction help and/or the replacement of furnaces, air conditioners, hot water heaters and more!

The students paired up and went door to door to also talk with residents to learn how the United Way could help. Then, the students relayed the information to United Way leaders so volunteers could be assigned to help the homeowners with their needs.

The students heard firsthand what these residents experienced. For many homeowners, they lost everything and their insurance did not cover the loss of personal property. One resident told how she could only get around by boat, which she tied to her front porch! Other residents showed newspaper accounts of what the area looked like during the flooding. While many residents were well on their way to getting back to normal, there were many others who needed a lot of help because they either didn't have the financial means or manpower to get the work completed.

Cassis Chlevin, a sophomore, recalled: "Prior to our trip to Munster, Indiana, I had never done any surveying for disaster relief. I was surprised at how easy and rewarding it was. It was amazing to see how many people were keeping a positive attitude after all they had gone through! A lot of people were very eager to talk with us and were grateful for our help. One lady even called us angels and gave us a big hug!"

Most of the residents told the students how much they appreciated their visit and wanted to pray with the students before they left. It was the students, however, who received the biggest blessing from knowing they really did make a difference in the lives of people in need.

Danny reflected, "It is God's will that all men be knowledgeable about His love and desire for them to be saved. But, how is this accomplished? One of the ways this is done is through mission work. When people think of mission work, however, they often think of Africa, India, Central America or Asia. But, mission work can be done in Munster, Indiana, as well. It was a joy to see students walking from house to house, knocking on door after door, to bring help and free service to families who have been displaced by the floods."

Help Haiti - You can make a differnce

Tens of thousands of children, women, and men affected by the earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti on January 12, 2010 are now living on the streets and in makeshift camps. Many of them are in mourning for families who have died in the catastrophe; others are still hoping to find family members and friends.

"The people need everything," says John Torres, Sr. Media Specialist for ADRA International currently on the ground in Haiti. "Most of them have the clothing on their back and that is it. Words cannot begin to describe the devastation, the extreme loss of lives and goods, and the long-term help that is needed here."

ADRA, in partnership with Global Medic, is already providing clean water for 30,000 individuals each day currently living on the grounds of the Adventist University and ADRA compound. In addition we are distributing thousands of water purification tablets and clean water to individuals far from the clean water facility. We’ve brought four mobile medical units, medical teams, 13 boxes of medical supplies and medicines, and oral rehydration salts into the country. Our search and rescue team are working long days desperately trying to save people still trapped in the rubble.

Nearly 20,000 displaced people are living on the grounds of the ADRA compound.

Sanitation facilities are non-existent. We have begun the necessary task of building 60 latrines. Without proper sanitation these displaced children, women, and men run the risk of contracting rampant diarrhea, and even cholera and typhus.

ADRA medical teams are working around the clock saving lives. However they are running out of supplies and medicines. Without general antibiotics those who have undergone amputations, and even those who have suffered simple injuries like cuts and scrapes, may yet lose their lives due to infection.

Before the water filtration system was installed at the university well, many refugees got their drinking water downstream from where others were washing and relieving themselves. ADRA is distributing 14,000 biscuits in five centers, however much more is needed. While we are procuring more food, large tents for shelter, blankets, and medicines these items will only address the immediate needs.

3ABN to launch SONBEAM Channel

Three Angels Broadcasting to Launch the SonBeam Channel

Three Angels Broadcasting Network (3ABN) will launch the first Seventh-day Adventist children’s television channel on January 1, 2009. The SonBeam Channel™ will feature 24-hour Christian programming with a primary target of children ages 12 and under, and will be distributed via the Internet on MOPCWeb™ and the MOIPTV™ system. “We’re very excited about the opportunities the SonBeam Channel will open up,” says 3ABN president, Jim Gilley. “Our focus at 3ABN has always been on ‘children of all ages,’ and this means the little ones, for sure. I believe that the SonBeam Channel is God’s latest tool to win His children.”

3ABN founder, Danny Shelton, agrees. “The SonBeam Channel is part of the original vision to take the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14 to the whole world, and to make it understandable for every age group.”

The channel will initially be offered via the Internet through the MOPCWeb website (www.mopcweb.com) and also by MOIPTV, a set top box that uses high-speed Internet to provide a highquality picture. Although relatively new, the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) technology is quickly gaining popularity across the United States and the world as an alternative to cumbersome satellite dishes and regulations.

Mollie Steenson, 3ABN’s general manager, says, “Many of us have dreamed, talked about, and anticipated this new channel for many years. Our hope is that it will evolve into a full-fledged television network in the future.”

Moses Primo, president of Media Opportunities IPTV, says, “The SonBeam Channel will be a tremendous resource for parents to safely allow their children to watch TV, knowing that the content is carefully in harmony with the Bible. As a parent of four children I know the challenge of finding programming that reflects both family values and Bible truths in an accurate way, and I’m confident that the SonBeam Channel will be an answer to that problem.” “I’ve been hoping, dreaming, and praying for a children’s channel for about two years,” exclaims Joyce Neal, of Chehalis, Washington, “and now that it’s beginning to take shape, I can’t wait!” As the host of 3ABN’s Grandma’s House, Joyce has a great passion to help bring the channel into being, and is currently
volunteering her time to help find quality programming. A Burning Heart

We were sitting in a restaurant, getting a bite to eat—Michelle and Viorel Catarama and I with Ken Denslow, the Illinois Conference president. I listened to their dream of planting a church.

"Where do you have in mind?" I asked the couple.

"Naperville."

"Then you'll want to move into the community," I encouraged.

"Never!" was Michelle's quick response. I saw the set of her jaw and resolved not to discuss the matter further. Still, I could sense that Michelle had a heart on fire to reach into the community for God. Viorel, too, longed to bring people to Jesus.

Naperville, a high-end community just outside of Chicago with lots of beautiful homes and lots of beautiful people, had no Adventist presence. They did not have God's beautiful truth.

What made Viorel and Michelle think they could plant a church? Viorel is in construction, and Michelle is a real estate agent. Sure, they were active members of the Hinsdale Adventist congregation. But plant a church?

Their first inspiration to start a new church came at the North American Division convention of Adventist-laymen's Services & Industries (ASI), an organization of missionary-minded Adventists. There Michelle and Viorel heard the testimony of a church planter. And as they talked about it afterward, they spoke of the city of Naperville without knowing for sure why. Right away they talked to their conference president, and they enlisted the support of their pastor at Hinsdale who encouraged them to share their dream with the congregation. People came together to pray and begin outreach activities.

The following year at ASI the Cataramas heard another story about church planting. Back home they began in earnest to look for a place to rent, to purchase, to use for free ... anything! But nothing was available. They did see what they thought would be an ideal place—the Naperville Women's Club (NWC) right downtown. The NWC had purchased an old German church in 1925; it remained unchanged with even its pulpit and piano still in place. The Cataramas contacted the NWC, but the club was not interested in renting to them.

The third year at ASI during another story of church planting, Viorel and Michelle clasped hands and began to pray that God would find them a place to meet. In the middle of the prayer Michelle stopped and said, "Lord, we need the Naperville Women's Club, and we need it this week!"

The very next Thursday following ASI, Viorel drove down the road on his way to a real estate closing. Suddenly, he found himself stuck in traffic—right beside the NWC. A sign in front read: "FOR RENT." Could it be? Yes, the next day, Friday, they left the NWC at five o'clock with a signed lease for one year.

Michelle and Viorel called the people who prayed for their vision and those who supported their ministry, distributing books with them—people from both the Hinsdale and Downers Grove churches. They told the good news and issued an invitation, and 50 people came on short notice. God answered their prayer! By Sabbath afternoon following ASI they had their first worship service at the NWC.

Walter Thompson, a Hinsdale surgeon, told the group that day, which happened to be his final Sabbath in the area before he retired, that it was his dream when he moved to Hinsdale 30 years earlier to plant a church in Naperville. "Today God has shown me the fulfillment of my dream," he ended.

At first the leadership rested heavily on Viorel and Michelle's shoulders. But people began to step forward and carry the load—children's leaders, youth leaders and more. Nineteen were baptized during an evangelistic series in 2006. These became the core of the new congregation. "As Hiram Rester, the young seminary student-evangelist, preached from night to night," said Michelle, "I saw lives being changed before my eyes."

Out of that series they baptized three generations of one family, the Nettletons—Kathy, Alice and Louise. Alice is Kathy's mother and Louise's daughter-in-law. Although Grandma Louise couldn't always attend, Kathy and Alice picked up all the materials, purchased the tapes, and together they studied the next day. When Grandma Louise learned that Kathy and Alice had decided to be baptized, she declared she wanted to be baptized, too—97 years old, in the cold of October—she was ready. Into the portable baptistry Grandma Louise climbed ... and out again. The Nettletons have expressed more than once how grateful they are to God for the flier that came in the mail, and thankful for the small church with members who share God's truth. They sometimes wonder, Why did we receive the flier? We live just outside of Naperville, and really shouldn't have gotten it. God must have meant it for us!

A young couple who were engaged to be married, Kristine and George Prada, also received a flier in the mail. They wanted to learn about prophecy and came faithfully to the seminar. In those few weeks they experienced radical transformation. As God moved in their lives, they made major decisions and developed close friendships with church members. On a Thursday night they were baptized, and on Sunday they were married! Today George is one of the Sabbath school teachers, and Kristine is the children's Sabbath school leader.

After launching in August 2005, the Naperville congregation was organized as a company in April 2006 and became a full-fledged church in June 2008. It began as a lay-led church and continues without a paid, conference-provided pastor. Today it is led by a hard-working, evangelistic-minded church board team of seven headed by first elder Dan Forde. The congregation has a very active youth group.

The Naperville Church members reach out into their community. They go from door to door contacting people, and they provide entry events such as health classes and creation seminars. Recently, members offered a seed-sowing weekend seminar at a local college comparing the five major world religions. A Naperville Church member, Barbara Weimer—teacher, author and youth leader—and Ed Barnett, Illinois Conference ministerial director, joined forces to preach the Gospel in a ShareHIM evangelistic series.

The Catarama family takes evangelistic mission trips to India, the Philippines and Africa. But their primary mission field? ... That's Naperville. Viorel told me one day, "Planting a church is like having a baby—you cannot leave it alone for long! It's so much work! But there is so much joy!"

Viorel counsels would-be church planters from their own experience: "If you want to plant a church, you must gain the support of your local church and pastor. Too often a church plant is like a church separation or divorce. And work closely with your local conference. Develop a core group who is united like the disciples described in the book of Acts (in Scripture). Plan and implement your evangelistic strategy. And pray through it all! It is true, planting a church is not easy to do; but the rewards are there! They may not come immediately, but they come. When God gives you a vision, don't get discouraged. Keep going. Stick with it!"

Michelle's testimony is very personal. "I have no thought of wanting to go to a different church. I look forward to going to Naperville every Sabbath. As I think about it, I feel joyous! I look forward to seeing the people. Walking into the church you sense the loving spirit. Churches have personalities, you know. Our personality is close ... like a family! Even to a newcomer, the congregation will reach out and find ways to draw them in. It's a welcoming family!"

Not long ago Viorel said, "Do you remember when you told us we should consider moving to Naperville? And do you remember that Michelle responded, 'Never'?" With a tiny grin, he continued, "We are now actively looking for a home in Naperville to make our ministry more effective."

Moses had a burning bush! God was in the bush. And He had a job for Moses—to lead His people out of slavery.

When God is in your heart, inviting you into His mission, He sets your heart on fire!

Hinsdale church leads out in 24/7 week of prayer

A week of prayer like none other will be held in Hinsdale the week of February 6 to 13. This inspirational event, deemed “7 days of 24-hour prayer,” will begin with a Grand Opening of the Hinsdale House of Prayer (Hinsdale HOP) at 5 p.m., Friday, February 6.

During this week, the main floor of the Church House, 427 E. Walnut Street — located adjacent to the Hinsdale Seventh-day Adventist Church parking lot — will be transformed into the Hinsdale HOP, a special place where individuals can experience prayer in many ways. “Our desire is for the House of Prayer to become a place where people of all ages can worship God in creative ways,” said Pastor Lidija. “The most important thing is to connect with God, to be in His presence.”

Rushville series leads seven to Jesus

Illinois—Rushville is a small rural town on the west side of Illinois with a population of 3,300. This year the group of believers were actually made into a "company of believers" who meet weekly for church services. Fourteen people signed on as charter members. This company of believers decided to have a ShareHim series of meetings in their little town.

The meetings started Nov. 7, 2008, and were held every night through Nov. 22, 2008. Each evening, the meeting started promptly at 6:55 with a couple of songs followed by a welcome, announcements and some gifts were given out. And each evening the ShareHim lectures were held and an invitation to accept Jesus was extended as special music was offered. Simultaneously, a similar program was offered for the children each evening in an adjoining room.

Adrian Amarandei, pastor, and Ed Barnett, Illinois Conference evangelism coordinator, spoke to the adults each evening. Hanna Crosby, 12 years old, presented lectures in the children's room. She used the ShareHim PowerPoint presentations for kids, and also offered crafts and music each evening as well.

On the night when the subject of baptism was presented, four people asked to be baptized in the adult meeting and two expressed an interest in recommitting their lives to Jesus by profession of faith. As the adults were leaving, Hanna came across the room with a radiant smile on her face. She said to the evangelism coordinator, "Pastor Ed, every day I have been praying that one of the young people that had been coming to the meetings would want to be baptized." She excitedly held up a card that was given to her by a 13-year-old boy who attended the meetings faithfully every night and wanted to be baptized.

It was so exciting to see the way that God blessed in these meetings; there is nothing like seeing people led to Jesus Christ. So the Rushville Company has seven people now who want to join the church. There has already been one baptism, and more will follow. Praise God!

Fifth grade class makes a difference

Illinois—The fifth grade class of Hinsdale Adventist Academy experienced what it means to give back when they participated in an outreach with Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit organization that packs and sends food to starving children throughout the world.

The students and their parent/chaperones diligently weighed and measured chicken, veggies, soy and rice into plastic bags for shipping. They then packed these bags into boxes to be sent to Haiti. The students were amazed that the 44 boxes they packed made up 9,504 meals valued at $1,516.15!

According to Brian Kim, "It was hard work, but it was worth it! Doing this really opened my eyes and showed me that I should help out more and not complain when I am hungry. ... I hope that everyone who reads this will also help out starving children around the world and pray for these people."

Madison Kerbed said it was something she will remember forever, "It was a great experience. We were able to give back to God for what He has given us!"

If the fifth graders have their way, according to Heaven Newsom, "everybody wants to come back here again!"

Educating our children for a life of service in this world is a big part of what we do here. In fact, the fifth-grade teacher, Jamie Alabata, is a graduate of Hinsdale Adventist Academy's class of 2003 ... so I would say we're doing a pretty good job!

Sheridan SDA Aids Local Flood Relief

Sheridan Seventh-day Adventist Church aids relief efforts in it's area!

The Sheridan Community rallied as many of the residents were affected by the mid September rains. Waters rose well above flood stage and many lost their possesions and waterlogged their houses. On Sunday Sept 14th, local resident and SDA church member John Czarney, got the ball rolling on how to best help those affected by the high water. In just a couple days the American Legion Hall was designated as the help center where food, clothing, and other essentials were distributed. Many from the church and community rallied together to help. Donations came in from other local churches, and residents. The Red Cross came in quickly to the aid and really did an awesome job. So please keep this community in your prayers as they dry out and start over. Thanks go out to the Red Cross, The American Legion, Fox River Lutheran, The Sheridan Seventh-day Adventist Church, and all the countless folks who gave their time and money to help.

30 Hour Famine - Hinsdale

The students of HAA are hosting a 30-hr. famine to raise money to combat world hunger.

Chris was lucky. He got to eat breakfast this morning. A brown and white mushy breakfast will be the only meal he'll eat today. And in Zambia, where almost half the population--more than 5 million people--is hungry, Chris is blessed to have that mush.

But some kids won't get anything to eat--all day. And you won't see them on the TV or hear their stories on the radio. In fact, before this day is over, 29,000 chilcren under age 5 will die because of hunger, disease and poverty. 15,000 of them will die from hunger alone. Today...tomorrow...and the next day...That's one every six seconds.

But here's the good news. Students at Hinsdale Adventist Academy are choosing to make a difference. They are getting ready to take part in World Vision's 30 hour famine. They're going to raise money by not eating for 30 hours so that kids like Chris can eat every day.

The Elgin Seventh-day Adventist Church Lends a Helping Hand

On any 4th Wednesday of the month, the Elgin Seventh-day Adventist Church voulunteers time and love at the local homeless shelter at the "Soup Kettle". In short, the Elgin Soup Kettles are a mission of the Elgin Cooperative Ministries. For the past 10 years a number of local churches including ESAC have collaborated with Elgin's Soup Kettle program, serving those in need with hot meals and warm smiles. Soup Kettle's Kitchen provides meals to 60-100 needy individuals every night. ESAC (Elgin Adventist Church) participates in this event every 4th Wednesday of each month. Simply, they help out, serve and participate at First Congregational Church, 256 E., Chicago St., 5:30-6:30.If you are interested in participating in this ministry, you can simply show up at the event on the 4th Wednesday of any month and ask for Nicole Taylor.

Nicole says; "Our church does "the second" shift so we help in serving and cleaning up. We have been involved for about 4 years and enjoy it tremendously.

Sheridan members touch neighbors for Jesus following flood

Illinois—On the weekend of Sept. 12–14, rain fell in record amounts in northern and north-central Illinois. With the rain came flooding that created disaster in many communities located downriver of the areas hit by the rain. The communities of Sheridan and Wedron, Ill., were hard-hit areas.

These two communities, and their adjoining subdivisions, are located along the Fox River. As floodwaters farther north raced down this river, these little communities watched as water rose some three to four feet above the river's banks. People in these communities soon realized they would have to flee their homes.

Two days later, as the waters subsided, the people returned to see the devastation. Furniture and interior walls were soaked with dirty river water. Food stuffs were destroyed. Fortunately, there were no injuries or loss of life.

As clean-up and recovery efforts began, Sheridan Seventh-day Adventist Church members had an opportunity for the next couple of weeks to witness their faith in Jesus Christ as they aided in the relief effort. Several members (Betty Platt, Steve and Christie Bell and family, and Myrtle DeLay) assisted in cooking and supplying meals at the local VFW-American Legion Post to those who needed assistance. Disaster and Relief coordinator for the church, John Czarney, helped organize relief efforts in the several communities that were affected. Students from the Sheridan Adventist Elementary School helped deliver sandwiches, water and clean-up kits to many of the people as they returned to clean up their homes. Some students also helped in the cleanup effort by shoveling river silt from sidewalks, yards and decks of inundated homes.

Their service to the community provided an opportunity to "Touch Everyone for Jesus" who had been affected by the flood.

Dollars rain down for commercial shoot in Earlville

Money rained down over Earlville Tuesday as city officials cleared the streets and emergency crews stood by.

The dollar bills floating through the air and piling in drifts on the ground were fake, blown out of air guns by a film crew from overhead cranes, on the ground, and in a moving truck. The crew was in town shooting scenes for a Mega Lotto commercial....

Not everyone in Earlville wanted to participate in the making of a lottery commercial. One Couple, Steve and Christie Bell, who declined in the offer to have their house used in the commercial, say they objected when the filming nevertheless began to involve their home on Winthrop Street.

Mr. Bell said he and his family are interested in film making and would have liked to be part of a commercial production, but he said they could not be involved in a commercial for the lottery.

“It’s about personal convictions,” he said. “The lottery just doesn’t help people. It takes money away from people, mostly poor people. Half the people who win end up bankrupt or divorced. It separates people from their money.” He added that the promises that the lottery proceeds would support the schools have not been kept. “They give the money to the schools, but then they take the other funding away from the schools.”

He said he had explained his views to the location team in advance and they agreed to not include the Bell’s house in the commercial.

But the spinout scene was shot in the street just a few feet from the Bell’s house, and the couple say it eventually began to involve their family, like it or not.

“We didn’t care what they did on the street,” Mrs. Bell says. But the problem came when her sons, who had been indoors all morning, went outside to play in their yard.

Crew members said they did not want the boys and their friends playing so near the filming equipment, which included several overhead booms, and the stunt car, for safety reasons. The Bells say the cameras were aimed in the direction of their house, which had been assured would not appear in the commercial.

Mrs. Bell says several crew members, ordered the kids to go into the house, although she told them most of the boys playing there were not her children. She says one crew member told her that She and her son had been filmed in the scene

“If our property was not included in the scene, and we were on our porch, how could we have been shot in the scene?” she said.

After what both sides said was an argument, the film crew decided to move to a different location, having already shot most of what they had planned at that location.

The Hope Channel coming to DIRECTV

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has its own TV programming. It is called the Hope Channel.

For a number of years, people were able to get equipment that would allow them to view this official Adventist TV programming, along with a few other stations (like 3ABN, etc.).

The news is that Hope Channel will soon be available for 17 million people to watch (if they desire). Hope TV is partnering with DIRECTV beginning April 29 2009. Hope TV will be on Channel 368. You can let your friends know that there is excellent programming available on that channel beginning April 29 this year.

Winter Youth Retreat

The annual YOUTH WINTER RETREAT to Michigan for youth ages 13 and up is just around the corner, January 15-18, 2010. Besides fellowship and worship, activities will include downhill skiing or snowboarding, tobogganing, snow-tubing and ice skating. The fee of $120* includes all activities**, lodging in heated cabins and meals from Friday supper to Monday brunch. Space is limited to 70, so send in your deposit of $50 ASAP to hold your place.
