In early 2003, my weight was 209 lbs. I was not on any medications, but my doctor had told me sometime prior to this that my cholesterol was borderline high at 220 and that I should watch what I eat. He gave me no instructions, and I had made no changes in my diet to reduce cholesterol, so it was probably still at 220 or possibly higher. My blood pressure had always been and still was 120/80.
At this time, the Savanna Seventh-day Adventist Church bible study group decided to study the biblical principles for good health. My husband Edwin and I had been studying with this group through the books of Daniel and Revelation after attending their prophecy seminar about a year earlier. Now we studied from the bible God’s instructions for good health and watched the Micro-CHIP videos called "Healthy Beginnings," a shorter version of the full-fledged CHIP program. Everything we were learning from the bible seemed sensible and was fully supported in the videos through scientific studies. I began changing over to the CHIP lifestyle, and was soon losing weight and gaining energy.
The simplicity of the changes clarified in my mind that this church was teaching God’s truths, for health as well as in prophecy and revelation, and I made the decision to be baptized.
In August 2003, a few months after settling into the CHIP lifestyle, my blood pressure was checked, and I was thrilled to learn that it was 114/74—the lowest reading I could ever remember having. In January 2004, my weight was down to 165 (a 44 lb. loss). I no longer had food cravings and rarely felt any desire to snack between meals.
By then, I had begun to exercise less, and my weight loss began to slow, finally reaching a plateau at 160-162. In May 2004, my weight was 161, blood pressure was running between 100/60 to 110/70 (great!), and my cholesterol checked out at less than 150 (Awesome!). The cholesterol machine wouldn't read below 150, so a specific number was not available. My energy level was up considerably, and I no longer had aches and pains when moving about after being sedentary for a time.
In June, my weight hit 158 a few times, the lowest it had been in over 30 years. By August, I was slacking off on some of the changes I had made, and my weight very slowly began to rise again, reaching 162 in December. From December 2004 to June 2005, my weight remained at 160 to 162. Since I still wanted to loose another 25 lbs., I decided to kick my efforts into high gear. On June 7, 2005, I recommitted to regular and increased exercise and fine-tuned my eating habits.
